Future in the Falls

The Scholarship

The United Regional Foundation provides scholarships to participating medical students who meet selection committee criteria.

Grants from the J.S. Bridwell Foundation and the Bryant Edwards Foundation have made it possible to award Future in the Falls scholarships to 13 medical students from the Wichita Falls area. Contributions and grants to the Future in the Falls program are sought annually to encourage medical students to consider returning to the Wichita Falls area when they begin their medical practices.

While accepting a scholarship will in no way obligate students to practice in Wichita Falls after receiving their medical degree, it is anticipated that those who participate in the Future in the Falls program are giving significant consideration to returning to the area.

Scholarships are paid directly to medical schools to help defray educational costs.

How it all started

In 2008, United Regional launched the program that evolved from a conversation between Phyllis Cowling, President and CEO of United Regional, and Dr. David Flack, pathologist and father of Dr. Allen Flack – medical student at the time. There was an agreement that individuals who are already familiar with the Wichita Falls community could be ideal candidates to help build the next generation of local physicians. So began the Future in the Falls program. Thirteen physicians are currently practicing in Wichita Falls who went through the Future in the Falls program.

Dr. Allen Flack followed his father’s footsteps, and in fact joined him in practice at Pathology Associates of North Texas in Wichita Falls in 2015.

"Future in the Falls allowed a direct line of communication to United Regional and area physicians. The support and guidance of the program enriched my medical school and residency training by providing a clearer vision for my future. Returning back to my home city was always a potential option, but the program made my decision to return much easier. I felt confident that my family and I would be tremendously supported. I’d absolutely encourage others to join the program."

"To receive this kind of support from my hometown gives me pride. The program means so much to me. There is nothing like it in any other city from what I can tell and it makes my classmates wish they were from the Wichita Falls area too."

- Canon Cornelius, Scholarship Recipient | McGovern Medical School, Houston, TX

"I grew up in Archer City, and both my wife and I have strong family ties to the Wichita Falls area. Med school can be a bit isolating at times, so it’s nice to have the support from people back home in whatever capacity possible. Helps me remember where I come from."

- Collin Buerger, Scholarship Recipient | UT Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, TX
