What is the Health Insurance Marketplace and who qualifies?

The Health Insurance Marketplace is a service created under the Affordable Care Act to help people and small businesses find and enroll in affordable, high-quality health insurance plans.

You may be eligible for a Marketplace plan if you do not have insurance through:

• Your job
• Medicare
• Medicaid
• The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) 
• Another source that provides qualifying health coverage

To qualify you must:

• Live in the United States
• Be a U.S. citizen or national (or be lawfully present) 
• Not be incarcerated

Can I enroll outside of open enrollment dates?

• You can enroll or change plans outside the yearly Open Enrollment period if you:

• Experience a qualifying life change or income adjustment
• Qualify for Medicaid or CHIP (you can enroll any time of year and coverage may begin immediately)

Where do I pay for my Marketplace plan?

Once enrolled, you’ll pay your monthly premium directly to the insurance company—not to the Marketplace. Your coverage won’t begin until your first premium is paid.
