Structural Heart Program
The Structural Heart Program at United Regional Health Care System provides cutting-edge treatments for conditions that affect the heart’s structure. We are dedicated to thorough evaluation and comprehensive care to improve your heart health.
Choose United Regional's Structural Heart Program
Our Structural Heart Program provides advanced, minimally invasive treatments for heart structure disorders including the heart’s valves, chambers, and walls, which can impact its ability to pump blood effectively. We separate this program into two clinics to better serve conditions – The Heart Valve Clinic and the Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Clinic (LAAO).
The Heart Valve Clinic appointment is a one stop shop where patients complete necessary diagnostic testing as well as cardiology and cardiovascular surgery evaluations. This approach helps determine the best treatment options for each individual through shared decision making.
During the LAAO Clinic appointment, assessments and diagnostic tests are conducted to determine if the criteria for the LAAO procedure are met. Patient education and provider evaluation are completed in a shared decision-making approach. For more information on shared decision making, please refer to the A-fib stroke prevention patient guide.
What do the clinics of the Structural Heart Program treat?
Heart Valve Clinic
The Heart Valve Clinic specializes in treating severe aortic stenosis, a condition where the aortic valve (which controls blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body) becomes narrowed and restricts blood flow. This can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, light headedness, and chest pain.
We perform surgical aortic valve replacements and transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) right here at United Regional, ensuring you receive the highest quality care in one convenient location.

Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion Clinic
The Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) Clinic is dedicated to lowering the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) who cannot take blood thinners. AFib is a condition where the heart beats irregularly and can potentially cause blood clots to form in the left atrial appendage, a small pouch in the heart's upper left chamber.
For individuals who cannot take blood thinners, or those seeking an alternative treatment, an occlusion device can seal this appendage, preventing clots from migrating to the brain and causing a stroke. The LAAO procedure at United Regional uses the FDA-approved Watchman™ Implant device. The procedure typically lasts one hour, followed by two to three hours of bed rest and an overnight hospital stay.
